I'm wondering : as the .pot files (only known to POV-Ray and Fractint)
are basically .gif's with 65K palette, aren't they subject to the 
Unisys stupid patent problem ?

I'd say so. A .pot file is just a GIF which is twice as wide with the low bytes in one
half
and the high bytes in the other.
