Question: I want to use some text as labelling on a package - can text be
used as a pattern or similiar, or is it always required to make some thin
text objects and union them with the packaging, offset so that they are
raised slightly above the surface of the packaging?

You can use the object pattern in megapov for this.

--
main(i,_){for(_?--i,main(i+2,"FhhQHFIJD|FQTITFN]zRFHhhTBFHhhTBFysdB"[i]
):_;i&&_>1;printf("%s",_-70?_&1?"[]":" ":(_=0,"\n")),_/=2);} /*- Warp -*/

An image map would do - you don't need MegaPOV for this.

I know - but I try and avoid them whenever possible (they give me gas).

  Image maps have two problems:

  1. You have to create them and they are in a separate file. If you want
to create the image map with povray itself you will need two pov-files,
one for the image map, another for the scene. This causes extra work if
you want the image map being connected to the scene settings in some way
(for example the color of the letters depend on some identifier defined
in the main scene or whatever). Every time you want to change a setting
you have to calculate your image map again. If you have made the image
map with a painting program, then you'll have to draw it again every time.

  2. Image maps have limited and evenly distributed resolution. If you
put the image map on a surface which is near the camera and extends far
away from it, you'll have a pixelated texture near the camera and an
unnecessary large amount of data far away from the camera.
