I just ran a trace with Mike Houghs POV patch (the one he used for his
flower image with the new UV mapping stuff?), and I got a disturbing error
saying that gif images will no longer be supported due to legal issues? My
regular MegaPOV 0.5 doesn't do this so I'm hoping this might just be a
mistake. Does anyone know anything about this?

details. Are you sure your copy of MegaPOV 0.5 doesn't do this?

Since when removing support for a non-licenced patented format is a mistake?
Legally speaking keeping the support would be the mistake.

I better double check, but I seriously think it may have worked with a
GIF. My last IRTC entry (siren) used a GIF image for a heightfield
and rendered fine, but when I imported the same code into Mike's
patch it generated the error. I'll check again tonight when I get
home from work.

Actually, I didn't know anything about the whole GIF licensing
thing... I thought the patched version was buggy or something! Oh
well, goodbye GIF. It only allowed a 256 color palette anyway, so who
needs it.
