I'm using a pov-mode.el written by Kevin O Grover version 1.3 (last
modified 9/24/97). 

Is there a newer/better POV mode available for Emacs?

Certainly is, http://www.acc.umu.se/~woormie/povray/

And there's an rxvt menu system on my site that you can 
use along side it, read the text file that's in the 
tarball, the whole thing's only 8.5k to d/l.
