in the various groups, what are the largest acceptible attachment
sizes? i didn't find a note in the faqs about this. images seem to be
about 200k, anims about 500k, but utils?, text scene files?, binary
scene files? etc.

Since each binary file posting group is limited to 1 MB after encoding that would be
the
actual limit no matter what. :-)
Acceptable has been a subject of debate is all, but yes, around 200 KB for images is
good, likewise the 500 KB for animations (I like you're thinking). Guess no one ever
pasted a text scene file large enough to hit a limit, the scene-file and utilities
binaries are still going to be at 1 MB anyhow but perhaps the same reasoning about the
animations would apply to those groups as well. Medium-sized (500 KB) is probably
best
with largest files going to web space elsewhere if it can be helped;
<rhetoric>remember
that since the newsgroup posts get bloated by 33% or so that this makes all the more
sense</rhetoric>.

I think the exact limit for animations is 700 kb.
700kbbu (kilobytes before upload)=1 MB au (after upload) for some reason.
