I get the monthly magazine CGW (Computer Graphics World), and they never
have reviews of free/shareware software like POV-Ray or Moray or sPatch or
POVLab or...

I suspect its because the paying advertisers would be upset...

Mags tend to trumpet the advertisers.

Is CGW of any use to those of us who use only the freeware/shareware
for our work?

Perhaps it's better that way. Usually those people have never used
povray or only tried it once, and if they would write something about it,
it would be done without any experience of the program, only from the
povray help and a few povray sites (with dubious quality). This would only
give a bad image about povray.
I wouldn't be surprised, if they wrote about povray 2.2 because they have
it in an old CD, either.

  Perhaps it's better this way.

I enjoy reading CGW - articles include how graphics were done for StarWars
latest, or how 3D graphics are used in medicine - just interesting reading.
Each month they have a protfolio of 3D images from either a university or an
architect or?

Povray will be featured in the May issue of the Japanese Computer Graphics
World magazine.
It looks that the part of the issue is dedicated to freewares and sharewares,
with 4 main articles : Blender, Terragen, Metasequoia (a modeler, see the
pov-links) and Povray. There are smaller columns on BMRT and Lightflow.
The Povray article is written by Shiro Nakayama aka Sylow (who posts here
sometimes) and is a 4-page POV tutorial, with links to the sites of Moray,
Chris Colefax, Tom Aust and Nathan Kopp. It's illustrated with Johannes Ewers'
IRTC "Lakehurst disaster" and a picture of mine (which is why I know about the
article, since they ask for my authorization to print the image).

That's great! Must be a wonderful feeling to have someone ask to put one of
your images in print.

Um, no way.
I would be shocked to see an article about povray 2.2 anywhere.
Except an Antique Computer Programs 'rag'.

That was what I was saying. Better not write ANYTHING about povray than
write a crappy article of some povray 2.2 with a couple of days of experience.
