It really depends on the PC, though.

I think my last few have been around 1.8 (according to gamma.gif from
povray.org)

Perhaps using trinitron monitors has something to do with it.

Huh! At least part of the problem is my newsreader.  I dl/ed Gail's image
and it looks just fine in a paint program. Go figure!
