Is there a way (In Win98) to make Povray the default text application for
*.mac, *.mcr and *.out files.
I tried changing FileTypes to have pvengine.exe open them, but it tried to
open it as an .ini file and gave an error. I want Pov to open it in the
editor.
What I would really like is for them to show in the list box under
>File>Open
Same with the Insert Menu files for that matter...

Where were you when I was arguing in favor of this on sep. 30, 1999
in povray.windows ?
What do you need a .mac extention for ?

Mostly but I remain hopeful. Besides the obvious benifits of associated
file extension opening files they syntax highlighting for the codemax
editor would also become active for associated file types. If you open
a .mcr file now you get none highlighted code on your screen becuase
it isn't automaticaly recognized by the editor as .pov or .inc code.

Not if we standardize it. Colefax uses .mcr so that makes it a standard :)

Since there is a *.txt extension listed already you could replace that with
*.mcr for example. Unfortunately only this one choice possible because you
would want to leave the others (*.pov,*.inc,*.ini) alone.
To do it you need to open pvengine.exe with the older write.exe program from
Win3.1 (Write, not Wordpad) and choose to not convert instead of convert so
as to leave the source as is. Then search and replace all the relevent
.txt (and/or .TXT) extensions with the wanted extension, taking care to not
do any other changes (capitalization, spacing, etc. for exact replacement of
characters).
Then the FileType association procedure could be done, not sure of this
going as planned though since the editor still has to deal with it somehow.
However that should get the Windows version of POV-Ray to at least do a
File/Open... of whatever extension you would be browsing for.
I'm going to go make this change myself now and check it out, will let you
know how it went.

I'm back.
Well forget about making the changes to pvengine.exe I had previously said
and do them to the cmedit.dll file instead. Seems they are duplicated
there and pvengine.exe just skips over it's own I guess, it can be left as
is.
First thing to do is backup a copy of cmedit.dll.
The changes I made to cmedit.dll are simply to replace txt with mcr
and there are 4 instances of that located in a obvious section of the file
(2 more exist but need not be changed). I also switched out the word "Text"
for Mcro (1 instance of it) where the others are found at. The old Write
program (from Win 3.1) does this well if just doing a Edit/Search/Replace
after opening the cmedit.dll file and select No Conversion when prompted.
Unless you're familiar with it the newer Write.exe (20KB or 5KB) is just a
front for Wordpad.exe currently in Win9* and won't work far as I know. I've
tried the MS-DOS Edit.com for this sort of thing too and it doesn't do it
right either. If anyone knows of another non-formatting editor which can
successfully do this too the time is now to speak up.
So.... I managed to add in a *.mcr to the File/Open... and File/Save
as... lists this way. Then associated the mcr extension with POV-Ray to
Edit any of those files when clicking on them in Explorer. In case someone
doesn't know how: Run Explorer, go to View/(Folder) Options... and the File
Types tab there. Press the New Type button and put POV macro (or similar)
in the top field, mcr (or whatever extension you chose earlier) in the next,
then skip down to New button below Actions:. Now enter Edit for the action
and choose the pvengine.exe path with the Browse button, adding /EDIT "%1"
to the end after that.
The syntax hilighting still will not function automatically so to see it
you're going to have to right-click (or Alt-Enter) in the file while it's
open in the editor to get to the Properties and select POV-Ray for the
language.
I'll post this message to povray.windows so it's got a better home and I
hope I didn't make a mistake.

Go to TUCOWS and find Search and Replace for Windows, I think it does
what you need.
