Just came across this program at http://www.outertech.com
Not sure if it will help much but it's worth a try

Cacheman

Cacheman is a utility which tweaks the disk
cache settings and prevents frequent swapping
of the data to disk resulting in an improved
performance and stability.

It works on the VCache:

VCACHE is drive cache Windows allocates that can often
gobble up 25-40% of your installed memory. By default
Windows places NO LIMIT on how large it can be.
Wonderful....

Hope it's useful to someone

Kev

I already have it! What are good settings for someone who uses POV-Ray?

I'll be fine, my computer doesn't ever disk swap unless I'm doing some
massive render in MAX or adding huge layers in Photoshop :)

My computer has 128 MB of RAM, and I've got the cache set so that it takes
between 4MB and 10MB of memory. The main thing I use CacheMan for is so
that during renderings that take up a lot of memory I can check and see if
POV-Ray is using up all the physical memory on my computer or not so that I
can abort the render if it is.

Mark
