Gentlemen,

How does one render a file in POV3.1 without saving it?

I spent a while thinking to try to figure out what you meant by this. If one
takes it as read then the answer is "You can't". But since you probably
don't want that answer I had to try to get some alternative interpretation
of your question which would supply a more palatable answer.

I am guessing that you want to render a test picture without saving the
changes to your scene so that if you don't like the changes you can go back
to the original. If so the answer is to save it to another file name.

I usually end up with several incremented file names in the process of
making a scene.

Sponge002
Sponge 011 (major scene change)

This response applies only to the Win version of the program and my
not apply to the platform you are running Pov on.

If you attempt to render a scene after making changes without saving
Pov will ask if you wish to SAVE the changed file, save ALL open files
NO for no save and render the scene, or CANCEL wich cancels the rendering
operation completely. Once you select the no save option it will not ask
you again if you wish to save and it is up to you to manualy save any
changes if you so desire.
So there is your answer. Attempt to render without saving, select NO
from the choices, and you can then make repeated changes without saving
them to the file on disk until such time as you are satisfied with it's
content.

I neglected to mention that when the save dialog pops up you must also
select the DON'T ASK AGAIN option or any changes you have made will be
ignored and Pov will render the scene using the last saved state.
