My latest attempt can be see at
http://www.dlugosz.com/POV/another_world.html#Bianco_Carrara_C_2 .

I did a pretty good job of blending a texture to match a photo, considering
I've never done that before! So any pointers from the experts would be much
appreciated.

A question on layered textures in general: how does the lighting aspects in
the "finish" fit in? The transparent parts of the outermost texture seem to
affect the object as a whole via the diffuse and ambiant, even though it is
transparant there. I'm having trouble adjusting the values to my liking.

Likewise, what about "normal"? Should that go in the innermost, outermost,
or what?
