  Sometime ago there was source code posted in one of the scene
files groups here titled I believe Media Clouds. Very realistic
in their 3D look. There is also a reference image in the images
group. This was about 3 - 4 months ago I believe.
  For a more textural method look at Mike's excellent on line
tutorial on realistic sky's and water at:

Btw, the cloud patterns that I use in that cloud tutorial work
excellently in the density of a scattering media.  Just put it inside an
intersection object consisting of two planes, one of them inverse. 
That's how I did the cloud image I posted in binaries.images awhile ago.
