Maybe this is a stupid question, because updates should be
improvements, but I just wanted to know if pov3.1 is worth
the downloading time with a slow connection...

If yes, what is so great about it? I've noticed the new
macro's, but I've never needed anything like that (yet).

Yes.

Once you learn how to use macros, you will become an addict.
They are too useful....

..as are #local variables (except for the global typing "feature").

  It's a good question that deserves a good question. Why would
you not want the latest version of Pov-Ray. Besides the new macro
function the new version has a totaly new editor window. It is not
your basic windows word pad interface. It now has a full fledged
programmers interface with more great features that can be listed
here.
    Another important addition is the change from halos/atmosphere
to media. Take a look at the binaries.images group at the recent
cloud scene submissions and you will understand the difference.
    Before you go to bed tonight hit the download button and when
you you wake up Santa Pov will have left you some nice presents.
