Some days ago I posted a small, simple source file and two small images to
this group to describe a problem with text files. Is this the correct group
to post such things?

Knut,

It certainly appears to be a bug. The best way to be heard on this is
to go to the POV-Ray home page. In the beta down load area is a
bug report link. I would report that there is a bug between the two
versions as you already know. Try to explain the differences in output
you have experienced. Tell them that you have a conformation from
another pov users so that it is not just you experiencing this problem.
They ask that you do not send any files at the time of the bug report.
Unless they ask for it don't send one. You could include just the
TTF object statement from your scene in the report so that they may
confirm this for themselves.
I am very glad that you brought this issue up because it clears up
a mystery that was plaguing me on a very important project.
I have been trying to use international characters in the windows
version of POV-Ray but have had no success. This explains why.
It is very important that this issue is cleared up.

Dave Reynolds and Johannes Hubert are you out there listening ?

Ken answered the main part of your question. However, one small addition to posts
here: Please post images and source code to one of the binaries if they are large
(your attachement was not, but other might read this as well). There are still users
out there with slow or expensive connections and reading the newsgroup and getting
large (unwanted) files is not what they like - I am one of these users :-)
