I am rather new to both Java and POV-Ray. My question is this, if I
create a really great looking water-front scene, can I merge it with
the lake applet, and post it on a web-page? And if the answer is yes,
how do I address the merged item to put in the web-page? Thank you

What is the lake applet?
I don't really understand your question, but:
If you mean that you want to create a background image for a java applet
with POV-Ray, then the answer is yes, of course. Create your image, convert
it to jpg or gif and load it into your applet...
