as far as I know the only formats available are .png, .tga, and system
specific (i.e. bitmap on pc) but you can use a graphics app to change to
any format you want

No. The three popular image fromats supported
are TGA, BMP, and PNG. To obtain obtain other
Image formats you will need a graphics program
such as PhotoShop or PaintShopPro that offer image
conversion capabilities.

Try using JASC image Robot for general conversions, almost any format to
almost any format in batch form.

A GOOD freeware is ImageView by Mike Young (mik### [at] zetnetcouk), This
program provides thumbnails of your images and conversion to JPG.

GIF and JPG both lose some graphics quality (one in color the other in
compression). Easiest way to solve this is to render to TGA or some
other format, then use a graphics utility to convert. Then you can check
which file-format suits you best, and, for JPG how much you want to
compress the file. For multiple files batch conversion is the way to go.
PSP for instance does this.
