If your not planning any close-ups a bumps normal in the texture can
produce good effects if the y scale is exagerated.

I have also seen the "bend.inc" used very effectively for close-ups of
leaves.

I know thi sis a little late but heck, why not.  I've found that making a
coarse and highly contrasted bumb map works well.  It looks a little funny
closeup but with a little distance between it and the camera it looks just
peachy.  And you don't even need to texture map.
