Hello,

I've written an article about 3.7's backwards compatibility and how it compares to
2.2: https://19100.neocities.org/guides/povray2vs3

The page also goes into some detail about the history of each scene and the people who
made it, which is what I'm hoping to get some clarity on. Certain scenes didn't have
authorship information (search for ??? to find them) and I was wondering if anyone
might recall any of the missing authors, I'm also interested in linking to their homes
on the web if available (sort of a "where are they now" idea). Also, this is a long
shot, but does anyone have the crysta.gif photograph taken by David Buck and used in
crystal.pov? If there's anything I got wrong in the article or you have any other
suggestions, do let me know.

On a side note the scenes I've seen being posted to the newsgroup are really
incredible and I can only hope that my own renders will be even remotely comparable in
the future, keep up the great work guys!

Many thanks,
19100

Those are interesting comparisons, and a nicely-made site. Good comments too.

I started working with POV-ray v3.5 or 3.6, around 2004(?). I missed a lot of
the early renders and experiments.

For your "Cluster of mirrored spheres" entry (cluster.pov), you mentioned not
knowing the author. The closest possibility I could come up with was here...

https://archive.org/details/max_photos_2500/3D%27S/BALLS8.GIF

It looks like a collection of very early raytracing renders, some made in DKB
Trace. Scroll through the images to 27, 28 and 29. One of those says "Andy Fu".
although it was apparently rendered in a program called RAYSHADE.

I've attached the GIF image here.

Thank you for the feedback Kenneth, and good job finding Cluster (I'll have to look
through that collection, most of it is new to me too). If you don't mind I would like
to put you as a contributor when the article is updated.

Never heard of Rayshade before, though it looks like it's still being maintained:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/rayshade/
Not dissimilar to POV-Ray it seems, I'll have to poke around at some point.

agree with Kenneth, nice, useful work. thanks.

I think that, for these ageing eyes, a better contrasting colour for the links
below the title would have been easier to read (say yellow or cyan, rather than
red)

regards, jr.

Hi jr,

Glad to know that the article has been useful. Regarding the links I'm not sure
I follow? The links are styled to a blue color (#0066CC) by default, the only
exception being the logo tagline. They do turn red for a moment when you click
on them, is that what you're referring to?

yes, sorry, memory misfire, blue not red, "senior moment" ? :-) regardless
though, think a better contrasting colour would help.

regards, jr.

Sure thing! I've updated the links to a "dodgerblue", let me know if it has
enough contrast.

yes, the "dodgerblue" text is (much) more legible imo. thank you, very much.
(planning on doing other version comparisons too ? ;-))

regards, jr.

Great, good to know that does the job. In terms of other comparisons I am
curious how 3.5 fares, though as mentioned in the article without 3.7's
multi-threading there probably isn't much benefit, still for the sake of
completeness I'll get to it at some point. When my next scene is out the door
I'm going to put together a build guide for 2.2, it's a little unorthodox by
modern compilation standards and needs to be modified for deterministic
rendering.

A small update to this, I tried building 3.5 from source but it relies on an
obsolete version of libpng that's API incompatible, so unfortunately I won't be
making that comparison. However, if anyone is curious enough and wants to do it
themselves then feel free, I'd be happy to link to it from my article if you let
me know.
