Forgive the obvious ignorance that motivates this question, but how much
RAM should I have to use POV at its best?

I currently have 48mb (on a 166mhz Pentium II), but I get the impression
that I should have much more -- in fact, that there may be no real upper
limit: "The more, the better."

How much do most of you Heavyweight Ray Tracers work with?

After examining the entries for IRTC June 1998, it appears 128MB
is the going standard for Pentium machines.

After having POV-pi choke on a current image (a big blob),
I just bought an extra 64MB to boost my current 64MB. The cost
from Sam's Computer was something like $80.... not bad for
such a substantial upgrade.

I'm not going to call myself one of the true heavyweights but
I've got my machine (a 166 pentium} at what I thought was
loaded for bear at 128 megs. I've been writing some pov files lately
using alot of math generated objects that after rendering pov reports
a peak memory usage at over 100 megs. My advice is look at the
output statistics pov gives you after rendering and compare it to the
ram on your system. Then add maybe 32 - 64 megs more to allow
your self some room to grow. At today's prices adding ram isn't like
it was a few years ago where you had to spend mega bucks and
give up a few body parts just for four megs.. I just read on one of
these news groups you can get 32 meg simms for $20 (US) on
the net. Now that's almost unbelievable but at those prices stock up
before the manufactures redesign everything again.

Well that's my opinion in that subject.
