Section 6.5.1.5 - is gif still supported?

evaluate

POV-Ray can also dynamically adapt the used max_gradient. To activate
this technique you have to specify the evaluate keyword followed by
three parameters:

  P0: the _minimum_ max_gradient in the estimation process, 
  P1: an _over-estimated_ max_gradient value, (1 or greater) 
  P2: an attenuation parameter (1 or less) 

If you are unsure what values to use, start with something like
evaluate 5, 1.2, 0.95.
         ^^^^^^^^^^^^^

How is 5 a minimum and 1.2 an over-estimation?

The second parameter is an overestimation *factor*, you are right that the
docs are not very clear about that.
