I was just curious. There had been a few books rumored earlier this year.  I
know the one with Mr. Waite fell through.  The last update on the POV book
project page ( http://www.povworld.de/book/ ) is over a year old..  Is there
still activity behind the scenes with the other efforts?

Looks like the outlook for a new POVray book is pretty dim, doesn't it?
That's too bad.  I big fat juicy book would really help spur interest in
POVray.

Wow! Are you a mind reader?  I am actually considering taking on this task.  
I would be going the self publishing route.  I have been debating between 
three possible approaches.

A) Standard Computer Manual - Similar in format to the previous POV-Ray 
books.  This approach is the least appealing to me as it would to a large 
extent be a rehash of the documentation.

B) Animation Cookbook - A series of "recipes" for different animation 
techniques and challenges.  This approach is the most probable, but my 
second favorite.

C) Coffee Table Book for Geeks - Large format (10 x 14) hard cover book 
containing full color plates of POV art with the facing page detailing the 
artists techniques along with pertinent code.  A CD-Rom would probably be 
included. I would solicit artwork from the community.  This is my favorite 
but I need to investigate publishing costs more.  I fear it may not be 
practical for self publishing.  

Any thoughts?

Not necessarily. I'm still working on this issue, will update you all when

Hi Tom,

I'm top-posting here.  If that's a no-no, I'm pleading innocence.  It's
really hard to
decide what to go for.  Abundant full-color illustrations would blow the
price through
the ceiling.  A purely technical book on programming techniques would be
weak
without the color plates illustrating the technique.  Very little way of
avoiding a $40
or $50US price.

I know it's debatable, but I think that a book on POVray should also include
signigicant
chapters on other freeware (cheapware) that is normally used in conjunction
with
POV, like Moray, Hamapatch, Spatch, 3DWin, FMP, TMPGEnc, etc.  More so than
a lot of other software packages, POV is essentially a part of an unofficial
3D design
suite.  God forbid it ever all come together in one package... I wouldn't be
able to
afford it!    ;-)

It has been over two years since we heard something. Is this still going?
