I hate to admit it, but this is new to me--not just in POV-Ray but .bak files in
general (I never paid much attention to them.)
So, a little experiment: Saving a backup of "my scene" becomes "my
scene.pov.bak." Then, by removing the .bak extension (and renaming the file in
this case, to "my scene A" for example), it changes back to a POV-Ray file,
ready for rendering. Cool!
I'm always learning.

Consider yourself lucky to have never heard of .bak files before.
Back in the good olden days, .bak files were ubiquitous. Every sane
program had them. After all, that's what we had instead of a multi-step
undo feature.
Hell, those times were a PITA...
