The selection box allows selection of coordinates outside
the full render area, including negative coordinates.  This
results in an error.

I don't know if this is intended, but perhaps a more useful
behavior would be to have the region truncated against the
full image limits to allow simple selection of regions abutting the
full image boundaries.
