I am useing windows. I am looking for a utility that will take a vector
format file and convert it to a prism. I have seen one for the MAC but not
for windows. Does anyone know of a utility that will do this.

It would be great to creat a logo in illustrator or CorelDraw and then use
that in povray as a 3D object.

Is there anyone who has a simple method of doing this?

Mike,
You might try 'Steve's Object Builder' (SOB) written by Steve Slegel. It is
a perl script which runs under windows, but you do not need to know perl to
use it. You would, of course, have to have perl installed. The URL is:
http://www.carr.lib.md.us/~stevensl/
It won't be able to use the vector formats directly, but it should be fairly
easy to do the conversions.

Mike,

If you want to create logos, have a look at:
http://software.wakusei.ne.jp/free/soft_1721.html
It's a nice bezier-spline editor that exports to POV-Ray as lathe, prism
or point array. The screenshot on the page is japanese, but the program
can be set to use english.
It does not convert from other formats.

The ttf object in povray does not do beveling.
I have been using heightfields already but this does not always come out the
way I want. Besides it is slow and uses a lot of memory. I really do like
what heightfields and have used them. http://home.quixnet.net/~m1j in the
gallery is some examples. But it does not work with every logo.

The prism provides the beveling and the speed that would work for me. I know
I could recreate the logo's in a program that outputs to povray prism object
but I am trying to consolidate my efforts. I Create the logo's in other
programs. i.e.. Corel Draw. I want to use them in Povray with out recreating
them in povray.

Is there anything that will help me? Or am I stuck doing this the long way
around.

This may be half the answer;
http://www.pstoedit.net/

There are dxf2pov and lwo2pov converters out there too, to complete the
transfer.

I think illustrator and Corel can save as DXF anyway,
so you may be able to just use this tool to convert dxf to pov

When you want prism from ttf (or 2D vector object) you have simple solution.
Create what you want in 2D vector software. Then convert/write it to high res
image and open in 2D image editing app. Select inside of shape. Fill it with
gradient according to borders of selection (black near contour, gray to center
of shape). Select outside of shape. Fill it with black. Save. Open povray.
Using created image make image pattern as function. Clip range of graynes. Use
it to create heighfielt with cutted black surface. I have no time currently
but I will try make some example. I used similar method in
http://news.povray.org/povray.binaries.images/24383/ except instead of image
pattern I used function created with iso_csg library. The adventage over good
old prism is that you can use splines to control crosssection of beveling.
I hope it was readable.

Grumble.... So it is. It was OK during the Winter IRTC round.... I have thus
far been unable to find Mr. Slegel. Let me know if you want to look over the
PDF documentation from the package. I have it laying around somewhere.
