This is the info for the image posted in povray.binaries.images
titled "Pov On Grass"

The next message contains the source for a procedural method
of making 3D grass in POV-Ray. It was created with a height field
object.
The image for the height field was made in PaintShopPro using
the add noise feature in the filters section. After adding 100%
noise twice I edited the pallet entries and reduced the color depth
to 64 K. I then used the sharpness filter to narrow the individual
grass "seeds" and finally re sized the image so it was squashed in
the height direction. This helps the illusion of having flat blades
of grass.
The height field image is 600x300 which gives reasonably good
resolution and grass density. I tried smaller maps but they spread
out too much to be of much use.
Once I was through with the paint program end of the process I
took the image in to Taps program Leveller and applied it to a
600x300 grid. It was then exported as a 24 bit tga that was used
to create the grass in this scene.
To get the file size down for this posting I reduced the color
depth of the image map before adding it to the archive file. It
renders nearly as well as the original and cut 250k off the zip file
I am posting. If anyone wants the full resolution image to try I'll
send it to them, I just didn't think it cool to be posting a 550k
zip file unless people were interested.
I know there is still room for improvement and I certainly would
like to refine my techniques but this is much better than image maps
and procedural textures any day.
