I'm a fan of scenes with chess boards in them, so I created a library that
generically represents chess sets, boards, and moves on those boards in a way
that makes it easy to play back real games. If you are interested go to:

https://github.com/carath63/povlibrary/library/libchess.inc

The scene below uses a model for a chess set I own with stone pieces and board.
The white pieces came out spot-on with my real set and the "black" pieces are
pretty close to mine as well.

The scene has one light source on the ceiling of the room, and the rest of the
light comes from an HDRI sphere with a cloudy sky, which you can see in the
reflection on the table.

It actually renders pretty quickly, and I made some provisions for doing
animations, so I may play with that some more later.

Sorry about the link confusion. I have a github repo with all of my library
code. You probably need a number of the files in that repo as they are included
in libchess.inc as well.

Your best bet is to do a git clone of the repo:
https://github.com/carath63/povlibrary

You should also be able to browse the repository on the github site itself and
pull individual files from the library folder.

thanks, I may give the clone a try.

(I think 'p.text.scene-files' or such would be "the place" to publish :-))
