I wonder if there is a way to avoid using PhotoShop? Is there a way to simplify
curves in Blender?

The splines can be done Blender. I did them in Photoshop because it easy
to jump from raster to vector over top of my hand sketch. It also gave me a
matching diffuse map for the face texture. I started with an 8K workspace to get
clean edge selections for generating the splines.

I should try Inkscape again someday, so see if it has similar functionality. (I
use Adobe Illustrator for vector stuff, but FOSS alternatives for everything is
always nice).
