Scratch that. The PNG uses alpha, with the colour channel set to pitch
black, while also carrying a bKGD chunk recommending black background.
Black on black - of course IC /correctly/ shows this as just a uniform
black slab if "use alpha" and "use background" are enabled.
I should have known better than to doubt IC ;)

no it isn't
This is one of those case where png is the preferred file type :)
If I understand your question correctly, you're asking if anyone else
ever created pixel-art with POV-Ray, by using pixel-sized objects,
right? If so: yes, I have, a long time ago, before I learned about
processing.org.
I used POV-Ray because I knew the language and wanted to do some
procedural pixel-art. But Processing is very easy to learn and much more
suited for procedural pixel-art.

46K as JPG, and 11.2K as PNG. PNG win by a factor of 4.5.

Hello/Hi
French is my birth language. If you ever need help... :D. There is an
international section in this forum in case of need anyway. I don't post often
but come from time to time on this forum.
