I've seen that one to. Those use melanin to capture nuclear radiation's
energy in a way that resemble what chlorophyl does for visible light.

Knowledge is being suppressed by our politicians who are the puppets of
the Chernobyl fungus. Beware! Wrap your heads in aluminium foil to block
the propaganda radiation!

David Icke.
Giant Lizards from Another Star. I tell you.

Thank you all for the discussion - it helped me very much.
Here is a last metal test for now - sufficiently alien and metal-like at the
same time.

WOW! I don't have the words to express how beautiful (and photo-realistic) your
creations are. They make my renderings look like ancient Pac_Man doodles.
Truly inspiring (although I doubt I will ever be able to create such exquisite
renderings.)
Patience + Knowledge + Talent, wow.

According to that article, actually several different fungi -- two
yeasts (Wangiella dermatidis and Cryptococcus neoformans) and, indeed, a
mold (Cladosporium sphaerospermum).

You know you've been playing too much Kerbal Space Program if that image

Good eye, Christoph!
Indeed the f_ridged_mf-function parameters are based on a planet code by Tek
(http://evilsuperbrain.com/gallery/finished/index.php?image=links).

You perhaps might like to take a look at Robert L. Forward's "Dragon's
Egg"/"Starquake" (also available in German: "Das
Drachenei"/"Sternbeben") - which deals with this very scenario: a
civilization of slug-like flat creatures living on the surface of a
neutron star!
See you in Khyberspace!
