Thank you all for the discussion - it helped me very much.
Here is a last metal test for now - sufficiently alien and metal-like at the
same time.

WOW! I don't have the words to express how beautiful (and photo-realistic) your
creations are. They make my renderings look like ancient Pac_Man doodles.
Truly inspiring (although I doubt I will ever be able to create such exquisite
renderings.)
Patience + Knowledge + Talent, wow.

According to that article, actually several different fungi -- two
yeasts (Wangiella dermatidis and Cryptococcus neoformans) and, indeed, a
mold (Cladosporium sphaerospermum).

You know you've been playing too much Kerbal Space Program if that image
reminds you of Minmus...

Good eye, Christoph!
Indeed the f_ridged_mf-function parameters are based on a planet code by Tek
(http://evilsuperbrain.com/gallery/finished/index.php?image=links).

You perhaps might like to take a look at Robert L. Forward's "Dragon's
Egg"/"Starquake" (also available in German: "Das
Drachenei"/"Sternbeben") - which deals with this very scenario: a
civilization of slug-like flat creatures living on the surface of a
neutron star!
See you in Khyberspace!
