It's a pity your work doesn't generate entire trees from scratch, but...

Now we can create needles, set to them length (and random), an inclination,
thickness.
On this tree of 200 000 needles

Sapling plug-in - the stable version always enters the Blender package. If it is
excluded from package, I will support, there difficult anything isn't present.
:) :) :)
But, smooth transition from branch to branch is necessary for trees.
It already other my task - to create blob from branches.
It after. :)
The dense needles don't demand type of branches. :)

Polygons write as prism.
Very good result!

Write, parse and render:
 mesh as mesh: 4 minutes :(
 mesh as prism: 20 seconds. :)

the dried-up sea: 40 000 n-gons:
