I really like it, but it deserves a setting.

That is the best crystal blade I've seen, but it looks as if it was done with
the irid keyword... you might try some photons and dispersion instead, but it
would have to be in a scene.

The version of this image (think back cover of a book) had text surrounding the
sword itself. No scene was required.

The colored part of the blade was done with four emitting media.

Why is it SO dark? I only see black unless I crank up my monitor 
brightness to the max and hit CTRL + A and it still very, very dark.

I like the contrast between the colors and the black background. Having said
that, the wife lightened the sword before she added the text. Personally, I
don't like what that did to the colored part of the blade. She does.

I had avoided posting the url to the image as it appears online. (This forum not
being the place to pimp the wife's book). You can see that one at:

You'll notice that it's not the same sword. The newer (posted) image is a two
handed sword, the handle being longer and thinner than the online version. More
importantly, the necklace chain is much more realistic in the second image. I
went from a million instances of a single link to individual links all
placed/rotated in the modeler. And, not that it's discernible, but the knotwork
on the first image is just floating in space. In the second, it's part of the
guard.

If you happen to visit her site, the background image(s) were generated using
the same method as the colored part of the blade.

How is your monitor calibrated?  I have no trouble seeing it.

(What is the Ctrl+A supposed to do?)

No need  for the sorry. I realize that I'm in the minority as regards to the
brightness level of that image.

I may muck with the second image in POV-Ray to make it brighter (as opposed to
GIMP'ing it) before the updated image goes live.

Calibration: gamma set to about 2.4, brightness rather low to prevent 
bluring on a CTR monitor, contrast set to 100%. Room light level is 
medium, but even with the light out, I still need to set the monitor's 
brightness to 100% to see the details of the blade.
Reducing the contrast don't help.

CTRL+A is a short hand for Sellect all. It highlight the whole content 
of a document. It's like increasing the brightness further still at the 
expanse of having a blue cast.
