I was frustrated by my inability to to get the built-in brick texture to look
the way that I wanted. Probably a lack of talent on my part.

This image consists of individual brick objects laid down with a series of
macros.

This reminds me of something I tried to do a long time ago... It didn't really
get anywhere.

You might try adding some global media as fog, but be prepared to wait for good
results.

Shortly after this image was rendered, I went down the media/fog path. I quickly
discovered that this scene was not the place to be teaching myself the
ins-and-outs of media. The rendering times were excessive, as you predicted.

( I generally use the plane-with-box method when experimenting with features
I've never used before).

See the attached for one of my efforts

That is a LOT better.  A little atmosphere - pun intended - goes a long way...

personally, I would have used Victorian style gas lights, but I still like it.
