Hi,

I've been hobbying a while now with POV-ray. I used to paint but bumped into my
limitations a few years ago and very luckily found POV-ray. I've not been a big
communicator on this site - I asked a few questions which were answered (thanks
again), and I've been able to answer 1 (yes, one!!) question, but I thought it
about time to post my images and get some feedback. They are on my site:

PS I'm looking for some advice on printing them for a small exhibition (and
uploading them to Zazzle and so). I'm using Gimp to add the text to my images
and then save them as JPEG. Is there a best resolution for aprox A2 size? Or is
as high as possible the best??

I have to say those are some of the more stylized and beautiful povray renders I
ever saw.  Not quite like paintings, more like paper collage.  Truly beautiful.

I remember you because of this funky nick "Joost".  How funky is that that it is
actually your real name? :D

Thomas de Groot also have this groovy oooo intonation.... :D

about the pictures:  the sun doesn't show up in the reflection in Ponte Vechio,
but I like the symetry. :)

You could just feed that into Gimp's new image dialog box and set the unit to
millimeters.

Hope it turns out ok with Gimp, since so many photoshop slaves love to brag
about how friggin unsuited it is for print since it lacks CMYK... I'd at least
try a few test prints in much lower paper size just to be sure...

Now that's a very unique style! I really do enjoy it. My favorite is the 
prague image.

Sorry about the paper size, I naively assumed the A sizes would be used world
wide. Like 50 x 70 cm or 20 by 28 inches. Looking up CMYK at wikipedia
(;-) I figured that my knowledge deserts me there. I'm not forced by anyone to
use GIMP, it was just the best (free) I could find. But if anyone has
suggestions for the best software to use (preferable free, or else at a "normal"
price (like up to $100), any advice is welcomed. Prints are pretty expensive, so
I would rather pay something for good software, than have to find out the colors
turn out bad on the posters....

for sure.

But thinking about a bit more, these are povray renders, so I guess the task of
generating those mostrous pixel-wide images is up to povray. :)

Regarding CMYK and prints, if you use an online gallery such as Zazzle or
Deviant Artists, the task of actual print for sale is up to them.  You only
provide the images, they provide whatever CMYK conversion is needed for print...

If you're still doing on your own, I really don't know how to help.  Seems like
CMYK is kind of a little professional dirty secret they get only to themselves,
like professional magicians, so as to keep competition away.  I thought
Paintshop Pro would support it, but alas, being a free tool never seems to get
you this...

I guess that's because there is no such thing as "the" CMYK color space. 
You have to know a lot about the pigments and the paper that will be used.

I want to print them with the white or black rim (passpartout) and the texts,
which I do in GIMP. Is there an option to add the rim and text in POV-ray? I
figured that the perspective would distore the text, if I tried that.

Do you mean as a private individual? Yes, sadly no company or friends in
IT/printing business behind me. I might walk by a printshop for some advice
then, see if they can help.

Okay, I'll just have to try it, then. I'll need prints for my exhibition, so I
might as well upload one and consequently order it as try-out (paying for my
first
royalties myself :-)

You could render the framed image in a separate pass,
basically loading the "painting" as an image_map. And
rendering it with an orthographic camera together with
frame and text. Also, screen.inc might come in handy.
