Hi all, I've been obsessing all night on this diamond, testing various photon
and dispersion settings...

One area light, micronormals for blurred reflections on the ground plane, and
the ubiquitous kitchen probe for HDR environment lighting (well, HDR to EXR via
IC's angular -> longitude/latitude conversion actually).

Phew, now that this monkey's off my back I can return to my elephants, gears,
pipes, grasses, etc. (i.e., working on my IRTC and TINA-CHEP scenes as I
*should* have been all along!)

Looks good, but...

... hey? Hullo? Wait!

The girder's not ok yet; for a true brilliant cut it should be circular,
not faceted.

Very, very close to realism!
A touch of impurities and a touch of focal blur?
:)

Very nice Robert! The only thing wrong as far as I can see it that the
girdle is too wide. It's the same style as an 'old cut' diamond with the
table being that high and having a culet.

don't know a thing about the cuts and facets and all, but lighting and
colorwise these feels to me like a diamond looks.

Heh, I know nothing about gem cutting either - I was just testing lighting,
photon, and dispersion settings. The model itself was just a quick
"diamond-like" mesh I three together from looking at a magazine and trying to
duplicate the look of the photo. It really surprised me that most of the
comments about my render were about the facets/gem cut instead of the image
itself.

That's because it's absolutely the only imperfection about the shot :-)
