Sweet!  Neat to see that implemented right in POV-Ray.  (Thanks by the way, even
though I haven't had a chance to try it out yet!)  Are the white speckles
texture or artifacts?  What was the rendering time?  I might recommend playing
around with the coloring and lighting just a little bit.  An opposing color for
the subsurface part can add some depth to it, and maybe a different lighting
angle wouldn't leave the middle so dark.  But I say that as if I have any
artistic sense, so take it with a grain of salt.  Neat nonetheless.

FYI,

If anyone can't figure out how to convert the Stanford models, here is how I did
it.

Import to Meshlab (open source)
Quadric Edge Collapse Decimation (to lower mesh size)
Export to .obj
Import to Poseray (freeware?)
Export to Pov include file.

I couldn't figure out a valid way to get it to work for awhile. Glad I stumbled
on Meshlab.

Meshlab looks like a pretty useful program.  I'll have to take a look at that.
Just to provide options, here was my strategy:

Import into Blender
Export to .obj
Process with shell script
Export to mesh2

I'm trying to remember if I didn't need Wing3D in there somewhere for some
bizarre reason, but meshlab looks very interesting.  Thanks for suggesting it.

I just played with the render again, and the white specs are reflection
artifacts from the HDR background. It must be small triangles that are rotated
just right to pull a super bright spot from the background.

As far as Meshlab, it works with the huge .ply files very well. Imports in a few
seconds.

Render time was little over an hour on an i7 quad core.

It crashes on me when trying to load Lucy (MeshLab v1.2.1 Windows 
binary, run on Windows XP Pro x64 Edition), about something like 60%-70% 
into the loading.

Now with proper handling for spotlights (and most other fancy classic 
lighting stuff).

The other Stanford dragon.

10 minutes rendering time on an i7 QuadCore.

I just found that PoseRay can apparently read .ply files, too. I'm just 
having it take a go at Lucy right now... will take some time though >_<
