This may be lost on those who aren't familiar with the C programming language.

Surely not your first post? :)

Nice idea, in fact I've got something similar lined up for the next Tina Chep
animation challenge.

Neat.

Are there any other "first time" cliches that can be added? Perhaps note that
it was over in 20sec, <nudge, nudge, wink, wink>.

Why should that be? After all, "Hello World!" is *the* 101 cliche with *any*
general-purpose programming language ;)

It was a stand in for the IRTC run by Steve (st) and was named by Thomas de
Groot from these newsgroups.

That's what I thought too. Wikipedia has something to say about it:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hello_world_program#History

Supposedly, the earliest known usage was '72 for the programming
language "B".

Oops, I meant to say it was used in a tutorial for that programming
language :/ But it was popularized in a 1974 memorandum for C programming.

As others have already pointed out, this is not unique to the C
language. Although the example in the original K&R "C Programming
Language" book is said to the the first.

Here are a couple sites with "Hello, world" in hundreds of different
languages:
www.scriptol.com/programming/hello-world.php
helloworld.googletoad.com/

And for real fun, check out:
www.gnu.org/fun/jokes/helloworld.html

(I found the first list by a link in the Wikipedia article, and the
second list and the 'jokes' by googling for "hello world".)

Another somewhat amusing version is from GNU. Although this has the
serious intent of being an example of the programming standards for GNU
programs -- among other things, this version has command-line switches
and even man and info pages! (I compiled it once some time ago out of
curiosity.)

Back then, when programmers were REALLY long-haired and took to the
Hippie trail between projects... albeit it was next to impossible to
find opportunities to practise programming in Kabul or Katmandu!

See you in Khyberspace!
