Hi everyone, not posted for a while, xmas, new year and winter sports have
conspired to keep me from POV-Ray for a while :-).

All the recent lego nostalgia caught my eye, so I went over to ldraw.org for a
nose around. Got hold of ldraw, l3p, lgeo and Bricksmith for MacOSX, and I've
been pulling out some of my old classic space lego sets for some rendering. I
originally tried using Anton Raves' converter, which is excellent, but too many
common pieces were missing so I persevered with lgeo. Bricksmith is a little
tedious to use (although to be fair, most CAD is pretty tedious with only a
touchpad!), but here's some decent fruit from my tinkering. It took a few hours
to build in Bricksmith, and about 30 mins to render.

I've fiddled with the textures a little, mainly to do away with the silly
ambient settings and improve the reflections and transparency a little, but I
have to say I'm very impressed with this library. The parts are extremely
detailed.

Bill

It's nice to see some familiar looking space-lego pieces. It brings me back...
:) And yours in particular reminds me of a nagging question I've had for years
j- where to get a particular lego.

I still have/saved a "big" physically-built space-ship from when I was (I think)
12. It was kindof the last significant lego thing I built from my childhood.
Anyway it's missing one piece as it has for many years - the same shape as your
clear-red antenna on the top of your crawler, but solid-dark-blue. Do those CAD
programs all use the same names for their pieces? Know where to find (not the
lego store at the mall)?

Charles

Whooo-yeah! That's the right stuff.

Had this one (like so many Lego space sets)...

Woohoo! Now I know that what I'm looking for is Whip/Aerial Design ID: "3957"
"Bright Blue". On their website LEGO only has it in black grey and white, but
then it also seems a bit odd that their selection would be exactly 1000 parts.
I've filled in a form and we'll see! Thanks!
Charles

Yup, and there's more where this came from. I think I'll steadily do over all my
old lego in POV-Ray - I've got about 20-30 complete sets knocking around
somewhere...! I notice the memory usage is fairly lenient (mainly radiosity) so
I can put many models in one scene... :)

Oh, and to Charles - good luck with the part, it's incredibly annoying to be
missing one piece, and I think I may be using Nicolas' links at some point too.

*I* may be using those links too...

I have a set from when I was much younger... It has a bunch of missing
pieces, and many pieces with teeth marks (best way to pull two pieces
apart! when you don't know better...)

Your jubilation made me mightily happy Charles. :)

Well, other models have not been so successful...

I've been using l3p to convert the models from the .ldr files. Good though LGEO
is, it does lack some pieces. Not usually a problem, the default ldraw pieces
are often good enough (especially in complex models), but there is an issue
with the space lego: LGEO doesn't have the classic space helmet!

l3p and LGEO support Anton Raves' parts library, which is not as big, but is
still extensive. There's a directory called 'lg' with the LGEO parts, and a
directory called 'ar'with Anton's parts. Strangely, the latter seems to contain
only a very small number of files compared with Anton's POV library file, which
means that the vast majority of Anton's parts are not accessible to l3p!

Each individual part .inc file in the 'ar' directory links to the relevant macro
in Anton's library file, together with the transform necessary for consistency
with ldraw. My immediate problem with the space helmets can be solved by
putting Anton's helmet() macro into its own 'ar' .inc file, and running l3p
again. However, I think it would be useful to update the 'ar' directory with
the rest of Anton's library, and I intend to do this over time.

Before I embark on extensive jiggery-pokery, has anyone else delved into this,
and if so, have you any thoughts?

:D Got the part! Probably one of the best 10 cents plus 2.95usd shipping I've
spent!
