I was working on this several months ago and had to put the project on hold.
Today I did a bit of cleanup and am re-familiarizing myself with the code. I
hope to iron out some problems (gradients can't go past one!) and make
improvements.

Basically, what I'm doing is combining the other textures into texture #1.

I aim to incorporate this into my Solar System include. The idea is that the
amount of snowfall and sea level is changes with the planet's incidence with
respect to the system sun. I trawled the web for some solar functions and was
having difficulty implementing them when I last was working on the project.

Also, none of the textures take rainfall into account when determining how
"green" a pigment is. Only altitude is taken into account. This also goes for
rivers (which are only at sea level where they come into contact with the sea).
I'm not sure how to go about doing this. My guess is that I would need to create
a pattern function that takes another pattern as input and measures somehow the
distance from the sea.

That looks amazing, much more earth-like than anything I've managed to
create. How detailed is it?

I'm not sure what you mean by "detailed". The pigment scales to the size of the
image plane, so there's a potential for infinite detail.

Yeah but if you zoom in on it you won't see people walking around!
What I mean is, can you render a higher res version with anti-aliasing
please? :)

Here's a higher resolution render.

Originally, I had intended to use isosurfaces. However, I ran into problems,
described here:

Here's another render after some settings were tweaked. It looks a bit better
upon close inspection (fewer tiny "swirls"), but somehow doesn't look as good
from afar.

Here's my latest. I'm pretty happy with this one.

It looks very promising indeed. Note that sea-level is not influenced by the
planet's incidence, except maybe with planets having seas the size of ponds
:-)
But vegetation most certainly is of course.
