Hi all

I'm playing with a new idea for a CGSphere (http://www.cgsphere.com for the
unfamiliar). The image below is my new version of the ground plane - the rules
say don't modify the ground plane, but since many entries don't feature it at
all I think I'm safe. I've not seen this done with the ground before so I
thought I'd see if it were easy.

It is.

That looks really neat, like you could reach out and touch it.  Are 
those all isosurfaces?

No, just one single mesh, copied and rotated randomly before placement. It's a
superellipsoid deformed with a very turbulent bozo pattern. Took quite a long
time to render, but only because of sub-pixel detail affecting the
antialiasing/radiosity.

Aha, I've been wondering about those types of images with the curved tiled
background like the middle of a half-pipe. I assume you used the mesh relief
macros to deform the block? If so, what what the mesh resolution? These look
really great!

About the rule-bending Bill, though it says: "The grid plane must remain mapped
with the provided grid texture and it may not be edited in any way (texture
included)," but I saw plenty of top-rated images that modified the tiles a lot.

Perfect, Bill!

I don't think this really infringes CGSphere rules. Like Robert said, there 
is a wide latitude to interpret the background, and I suppose that as long 
as the principle is still recognizable, you are within the limits allowed 
(whatever that may be) :-)

Sure did! Mesh resolution was between 300 and 400.

Yes, I agree. I think this will be a far purer entry than many!

Another version. I've moved the light source to bring out the relief more
clearly, and changed the erosion slightly. This rendered in about an hour (on a
relatively slow machine).

Another version, coloured. I'm not sure I like this colour; I may go back to a
blue/grey slate-type colour, but more granite-like. Or maybe a sandstone-like
texture. Hmm. The grass isn't quite right either but this was only a first
stab!

Basically, the color looks allright. It is mainly the color gradient on the 
smooth faces that I find distracting.
