I'm trying to get these planets to look good from the surface and from space,
without success. I also need to get the stars to disapear properly in the
daytime.

I didn't include a render of the problem. But when I put the camera in outer
space to look at the blue planet, the media looks oversaturated and unnatural.
If I make my media desity lower, the sky becomes black when the camera is on
the planet. The difficulty is finding the right balance.

What about this one, Nekar?

This scene shows a quiet, long-time ago terraformed planet with an own ring 
of ice. It is early evening, and fog starts to show in the deep valleys. 
Only a few human settlers live here. The two unequal moons of this silent 
planet are rising, and light fades already. The subterranean home nearby 
shows a woman sitting in front of a flying vehicle on the small landing 
platform of her place. A small path leads to another platform. The lights in 
the distance show the few other homes of this settlement.

Lovely. That is the type of thing I am working at. But to do this without
Photoshopping you would need William Tracy's forests and a Poser figure (a
blobperson would also do at this scale). Plus you would need lot's of
rendering time and a fast PC - which I don't have at home.  :(
