Just wanted to do a basic paper lantern thing, and later I want to add it to a
proper scene. Could I have some comments on what everyone thinks?

Thanks

Thats pretty cool. Are you using any of the double illumination
functionality?
Maybe throw some red kanji on there...

Yep, used double illuminate, then hollow together with scattering media. More of
a trial and error thing, but it came out okay. Kanji...I will think about it,
'cause the final scene's gonna be a bunch of these hanging on a bare tree, and
I'm trying to make it look sort of simplistic.

There was one of those hanging up in the office where I used to work. :-)

After Blue Herring's renders, I want to see this lamp illuminating a
scene, even if it's just some simple Cornell box-esque environment.

Hi - I think that looks great. Just a minor detail - the modern ones that
I've seen have a vertical steel hoop (like the handle on a pail) for a
hanger. I would guess that the old period ones would use some sort of
string. I haven't seen too many with kanji on them but alot do have some
decoration such as a butterfly or a peony...gjw

Not bad at all. Please add it to the Object Collection section.
