As usual, the best I can do is to rip off someone else's wonderful work.
Here's the video I tried to copy in Wings3D, but it's not too easy. There
doesn't seem to be any way to make a smooth sweep between two faces. The
bridge command only makes an ugly linear sweep with no curvature. So I got
sidetracked and did a bunch of other stuff instead. If anyone knows how
though, please advise...

And here's the POV-Ray work I copied:

All it is is Wings3D and POV-Ray. Pretty fun, really. I suggest you try
it.

maybe you can try to subdivide the faces of the bridge once, moving the
inner loop, and eventually subdividing again. You just have to make the
corresponding edges hard/soft

Only problem is you can't really move anything manually if you want to
preserve symmetry. You have to select the similar faces and use commands
that treat them identically. Maybe you could subdivide and move opposite
edges normal to the face. Hard to explain. But maybe. Thanks for the tip
though. Perhaps it gets me thinking in what might be the right direction.

I wouldn't call them unoriginal. They are great. I like the last one a lot.

Really, if those are unoriginal, I want to see an original one :-)
Very well done indeed!

Wow! Pretty images, of course.
I followed the tutorial, and I've created a similar shape with Wings3D. A
lot of work. There's no way to do a multisegment bridge between two faces
automatically, all must be a hand work.
But I'm happy with the result. Hope you like it.

Very nice. I'm not too good with convincing textures, but I like yours.
Perhaps a little light. Does ambient = 0? Because I forgot and used a
slight negative light inside all mine to add contrast. And I sure hope you
don't mean you formed all the bridges independently. That would be a lot of
work. As long as you use the select similar command, you only have to edit
one face as long as they all stay perfectly (!) symmetric. I'll post a
rendering when it's done.

I used Jaime's studio lighting
(http://www.ignorancia.org/en/index.php?page=Studio_lighting_kit) to do the
scene, and a basic metal textures for the linked stars.

Yes, all brigdes are individually and manually modeled.
If you want, I can post here the wings3d file with the basic model, only 784
polygons, with all bridges modeled.
