I followed a great TopMod tutorial at
http://www.topmod3d.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=73 to make this.
The Technical Stuff
-------------------
Shape made using TopMod http://www.topmod3d.org/
I UV mapped the front sections in Blender http://www.blender.org/ Took
forever! I had to re-do it 3 times.
Penrose Tiler http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/Best/penrose-tiler.html and
Illustrator were used for the Penrose pattern.
PoseRay http://mysite.verizon.net/sfg0000/ for obj to pov conversion. I love
PoseRay!
A pigment_pattern was used to get the gold and black textures.
Gotta love all the free software out there and all the great people that
make it. :)

Wow!
Like always, Janet, a beautifully detailed piece of work. Well done indeed.
I did not know TopMod. I shall have to try that out one day...

Ooh, that's nice. It's one of those objects that I wouldn't have a scooby's
how to make myself... Can I have one for my mantelpiece? :-)

I didn't either, but someone put a tutorial up for doing just this with
TopMod. Maybe not just like the one shown, but the Linking Stars style
object. Now to find enough free time to try something like this myself.
http://blip.tv/file/409128/ for the tutorial.

I love the lighting on it. I can't think of any other way to say that,
it just looks brilliant.

Hours and hours. Making the mesh was the quickest part. UV mapping and
material assignment in Blender took the longest. Then I played with the
lighting and materials a lot in POV-Ray.
