This is the final version of a WIP posted here:

http://news.povray.org/povray.binaries.images/thread/%3Cweb.45b4577e13e1c7fe8bf1dde90%40news.povray.org%3E/?ttop=244405
&toff=300

Some notes on the finished kennel:
* The grass is artificial, so it's very functional for use inside and around
the kennel
* The stepping stones match the stones used to construct the nearby patio
* The wiring for the lights is inside the fence posts, to provide a clean
appearance and for the dog's safety
* The apparatus in the back corner is a bracket holding two dog bowls; one
is plumbed to provide a continuous supply of fresh water
* I'm waiting for a shade cover to be delivered, although the kennel is on
the north side of the house and is usually in shade anyway

It was great to design the kennel using POV. The kennel looks just like the
design, so I'm very happy with it.

Ah, you freaked me there for a moment. I though that by final version you
meant final version of the image, in which case this would have been a case
of unsurpassed realism in a rendering... Nice design work though!

Could it be that you accidentally posted the photo of the original dog
kennel? I just can't believe it's PoV-Ray!

See you on www.khyberspace.de !

Your 'photorealism' had me going there a bit...
Now I see why you were going beyond the one fence alternative suggested by
others - the dog is large and the wooden fences might not hold up as well or
be as secure as the cage. Does 'fido' use the window to get inside?

Haha... It's all about interpretation. I didn't read the text until I
saw your reply. My first thoughts were, wow... this guy did a superb job
on rendering. Love the metallic textures on the fence, and don't know
how he did the bloom around the palm trees, but it looks quite
realistic. The only quibbles I had were the regularity of the
sprinkler-head looking things, the pose he had the dog model in seemed a
bit too "staged", and I thought he could use just a bit more
randomization on the stones. Also, the igloo in the corner could have
used more texturing work. It seems a bit flat.

Hmm, but if I'm critiquing the unreality of a photo...

No, we close the window when our dog ("Hansi") is in the kennel. The reason
the fence doesn't cover the window is because my wife didn't want to look
out the window and see chain link fencing. I wanted a very secure kennel,
but I had to compromise a little with my wife. It worked out very well.
This was one area that POV helped a lot with during the design phase,
because we could try different things and see how it would look
aesthetically.

Could actually work well in one of those "is it real or is it CGI" type
things if the background house and overexposed sky were not there. Exposure
and lighting makes it very tricky and interesting.

I'm impressed!

Sure its not a photo? ;)

Most photo-realistic image I've seen in a very long time. Well done.

Exceptional work. The only thing that looks "fakey" is the grass,
but everything else -- the light, the shadows, all the models -- look
outstanding. Well done!

One question: what are those black tube-like things on the right side of
the image? Can't tell what they are...

Dave's notes and PHOTO are of the finished kennel. Not a finished
render. He used POVRay to plan the kennel (see the above link) before he
hired a tradesman to build it.

It looks so real because it IS real.

Cheers!
