Okay, by (un)popular demand, I have a better one rendering that I'll post
when done. The code for the actual simulation ran about four days and it's
not exactly portable to other problems, so I don't know how much good it
will do.

I'm a big fan of physical simulation. Much like Mechsim or something, I
think it would be very interesting to actually turn something like this
into a closely-integrated system with POV-Ray or potentially even a patch.
Of course this code was more engineering-oriented, but I'm finally getting
to the point where I feel I could write a fairly efficient system for
visually adequate effects. The problem is I don't know exactly how to
integrate something like this with POV-Ray for the boundary conditions. I
have my ideas, but right now that's about all I have. The bottom line is
that I feel guilty for receiving so much from the POV-Ray community on
random little projects like this (thanks by the way!), but never offering
anything in return. Actually this goes for open source software in
general. I use it so much that I really feel in a good way that I have a
debt to repay. Every time someone asks me for code and it never
materializes, I feel worse. . .

Sorry for the rant. If anyone's interested, let me know; and if it sounds
like the worst idea you've ever heard, let me know that too.
