My latest CGSphere entry. I wanted to show it off here as I am particularly
pleased with the water.
I used a heightfield with f_ridged_mf as has been previously suggested, for
the base, then used a crackle pattern for the raindrops (form <1,0,0>).

Very nice water! I'd suggest doing something with the large drops on
the glass. Gravity would imply they shouldn't be completely round. They
look jarringly undrop-like, IMO. Make them sag a bit, perhaps, or maybe
add some streaks to the camera lens, where drops have run down?

I think it's great. Some of Darren's comments woul dbe nice as well. I think
i'd make the falling rain in the foreground a little less elongated, even
though i know you are trying to show motion. nice work.

Thanks. Yes, I took a little artistic license in the raindrop shape,
otherwise it's tough to show motion (motion_blur wasn't working the way I
would have liked and considerably added to the render time).

I suppose I could try to alter the drops somewhat. Perhaps I'll see if I
can find some reference images.

Yes, in reality, falling drops are actually remarkably spherical. It's the
drops on the glass that should sag.

Nice - agree with Darren on the drops - scale them a bit in the vertical
axis.

Really nice!
The surface of the water is so ...alive!
heightfield with f_ridged_mf? Nice effect!

Hi Trevor,
Firstly, thanks for creating the CGSphere template file, it's great to have
a POV template to play with. This is a great image, I agree that the
droplets on the lense need a less round shape and have a thought about the
rain droplets. Have you tried using multiple copies of each droplet giving
higher droplets a higher level of transparency? I have used this effect to
make a wheel look like it was moving and it worked quite well but it does
hurt the render times a lot!!
Other than that it is a great image and the water looke excellent.
Sean

No problem, too bad they don't have a way of sorting by POV submissions to
see what's all been submitted, still have to submit under "other".

Thanks for the comments. The only problem the multiple copy aspect is the
effect of ior, you can average out the appearance with increased
transparency, but I'm not sure how you can average out the refraction (and
reflection as I use fresnel).
Anyways, I have ran another render with a few changes:
1. adjusted the drops on the glass so they have more of a drooping
appearance as suggested.
2. changed the falling drops to spheres as real raindrops should be
(unfortunately this takes away the falling effect of the rain :( )
3. changed the cracked paint to an actual isosurface instead of just surface
normals to make it 'stand out' more. (for some reasons normals always look
flat to me)
