It looks like they are sat on a red sea :-)

The top bits look really good though, the little loop bit looks perfect.

Nice scene and well done! I am always interested in the hidden parts of 
those things, so, is that a (HDRI) cityscape that is reflected in the balls?

Thanks, I've now thought of a better way to model the top bits. That always
happens to me when I do modeling.

Yes, its an HDRI of the Frankfurt Opera I got free somehow, although I don't
remember how, maybe from a magazine that cost 12 bucks (hee, hee, not so
free).
