This is my first ever use of photons...

It's not a terribly good use of photons, because the caustics generated by
these shapes don't appear to be very interesting, but it was fun to make.
Something I didn't previously know about photons: aside from the pretrace
gathering stage, they don't appear to slow a render down (count was set to
7.5 million for this image!). The only reason it took 3 hours was the
area_light coupled with all the glass...

Anyway, here it is

I think the glass is too thick to get really interesting caustics but it's a
nice image.. I would be tempted to try out a HDR render of a scene like
this either Megapov or try the new 3.7 beta version (if HDR is added yet?)

A great first try! Far better than MY first tries ;-)

The slightly reflective upper surfaces of the cubes leads me to believe that
there is a white card (or something similar) above them, helping to give
them definition. If so, a nice touch.

Well noticed! Yes, there's a white sky overhead. You've got to have
*something* else for things to reflect...

I actually really like this use of photons, it looks very natural, often
when people start to use photons they make the effect fat too overblown.

Agreed, the very subtlety makes it unnervingly real.
