I have been trying to develop a more systamatic approach to using media for
atmospheres. Here are some results using the same model (more or less) with
different settings. (The clouds are not really part of the atmosphere model;
they are just there to interact with the atmosphere and show the effects of
the light).

These look really great, they are very realistic and apart from a couple of
the clouds could be photographs.

Render times were about 20 to 40 minutes at 512x384, depending on various
scene parameters. Media sampling parameters were generally default (method
3 samples 10 intervals 1).

Not so bad in my opinion. However, it all comes to a screeching halt once I
have to start using area lights to soften the edges on atmospheric shadows
or significantly increase the sampling parameters to deal with cloud
quality issues.

Most of them. :)

Considering only the atmosphere, I set up four different media containers
for blue scattering, blue absorption (reddening), neutral colored haze and
the glare around the sun. Each had its own color and density configuration.
A ground fog is also used to soften the horizon as well as mask some media
problems. Finally, there was also the altitude of the light source for the
sun. All this made for a variety of settings.
